Interesting Boston Tea Party Facts
- The Boston Tea Party was an American political and mercantile protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts, on the night of December 16, 1773.
- The Tea Act of 1773 was imposed on the American colonies by the British government, which was heavily in debt in the decade leading up to the American Revolutionary War.
- American colonists, frustrated at the British government for imposing “taxation without representation,” dumped 342 chests of tea imported by the British East India Company into the harbor.
- 342 chests of British East India Company tea weighed over 92,000 pounds of tea (46 tons).
- As a result of this and other protests, the revenue of the East India Company fell, which also troubled the British Parliament.
- Smugglers imported about 900,000 pounds of cheap foreign tea every year, and although the quality wasn’t as high as British tea, it was seen as a political protest.
- While Adams did not participate in the destruction of the tea, Samuel Adams was one of Boston’s most influential revolutionary leaders.
- The Tea Act was one of the many causes of the American Revolutionary War.
- After Boston, there were at least 10 “tea parties” that were inspired by the original and most famous one.
- Many people think the location of the Boston Tea Party was in the Boston Harbor, but it actually took place on the corner of Congress and Purchase Street in Boston, where there is even a Boston Tea Party Ship Museum.
